COP15 – Small thoughts on COP15

by Fredrik Stenbeck on January 24, 2010

No, we are not a company that will discuss if COP15 is a success or not. What we can do is to present some thoughts on the data from the event and how the impact was in social media.

First of all we have seen some really interesting things during the monitoring of COP15.

1. For the first time a tweet has reach the impfactor of the maximum level of 100. That is impressive. It is this Tweet from as we understand an Brazilian MTV host. Guy seems to be very popular since every blog post he writes gets 5 digit amount of comments.

2. Video still is the media channel reaching the most engagement. Many videos on i.e Youtube have well over 1000 ratings and 1000 comments. This in combination will a huge load of embeds and several hundred thousands of views. The vast majority is related to the official video for COP15. The video gain some serious traction and engagement. The “Raise Your Voice” Channel on Youtube is the place where the most engagement is collected related to video.

3. Microblogs stands for almost 80% of the overall amount of posts. This is huge compared to the average monitoring project. This is probably because from media, communication and from the political sector are heavily involved, in both spreading and consuming the information. In that sector microblogs are widely used compared to the average person.

4. Images don’t really make it all the way when it comes to social activity and engagement. This is not only related to COP15. Images simply do not create that much of social engagement. The major thing here is still that most people do not put their images in context. Title, tags, descriptions and all the other stuff. since not that many glue information onto their images they are hard to find and are they hard to find there are no social activity.

The interesting part about which information that created a lot of engagement is that it is in many different categories. From mainstream blogs to blogs about motorcycles and music. There is no clear dominant sector where these topics have been discussed. When it comes to countries and languages there are no dominant country either. The only conclusion is that is is way more danish posts, but is of course related to the location of the event.

During december it was several hundred thousands of mentions in all channels with almost 80% in the microblogs channel. Images and blogposts almost equal on 10% each and images was a minor amount (compared).
